Leona City
Leona City, the City of Leona, or just Leona is the eponymous capital of the Kingdom of Leona and, formerly, the Leonid Empire.
History
Leona City was formed when the Leonid Pilgrims stopped and settled on the Denatite Peninsula in -79 LE. During these early days it was governed by a council of Leonist elders. The city was at first rather insular, but from around -45 LE, Leona City entered trade agreements with the city of Equulia.
In -11 LE, an incursion of barbarians from the surrounding rainforest mounted an invasion of the city. Arminda Corle, matriarch of the Corle family, organised a defensive militia, and the invasion was fended off. 11 years later, her successor Belphoebe Corle used the family's new-found status to crown herself the first Empress of Leona, at the same time restructuring the Council of Leona into The Consulate and formalising the pride system. This date was later chosen to mark the beginning of year 0 in the Leonid Calendar.
Across the next two centuries, Leona stood as the heart of the Leonid Empire through its expansion during The Turf Wars. Then, on Antara 16th 194 LE, Leona City was attacked by an act of terrorism now known as the Sack of Leona, destroying much of the city's infrastructure and killing all members of House Corle. Subsequently, House Areli took control of the empressship, and worked towards the ratification of the Treaty of Leona in 227 LE, written and signed in the city itself.
Government
Unlike other areas of Leonid Civilisation, Leona City is under direct rule from the Consulate and the Empress of Leona.
